Bhutan, 7th Country to graduate from the Least Developed Countries (LDC)

On the day of August 18th, 2023, a rarefied opportunity graced me as I participated in an exclusive audience with the esteemed Secretary-General of the United Nations. This momentous occasion unfolded within the prestigious confines of the RUB HALL, where my contingent comprised not only 21 erudite fellow students but also five accomplished colleagues from my school. Notably, our assembly was augmented by the presence of dedicated educators and students hailing from various schools under the aegis of Thimphu Thromde, adding a broader academic tapestry to this gathering of minds.

Contributions to Bhutan's Education System: An Academic Journey

This recount my experiences and contributions as a visiting examiner, invigilator, test developer, marker, assistant chief marker, chief marker, proctor, and curriculum reviewer in various educational institutions and examination boards in Bhutan. Through these roles, I have had the privilege of contributing to the development of Bhutan's education system and fostering academic excellence. It highlights the significance and impact of each role in promoting quality education and preparing the students for a bright future.

My Seven Years Stay in Babesa Higher Secondary School

Education plays a pivotal role in shaping an individual's life and character. For seven significant years, I had the privilege of being a student at Babesa Higher Secondary School, where I experienced transformative academic and personal growth. This chronicle of my journey through the school, highlighting key moments and changes that occurred under different leadership. 

The BPST (Bhutan Professional Standard for Teachers)

The Bhutan Professional Standard for Teachers (BPST) was introduced as a comprehensive framework to enhance the quality of education in Bhutan. The objective of the BPST was to establish clear guidelines and benchmarks for teachers' professionalism, competency, and development. However, despite its good intentions, the BPST has faced significant challenges and has been marred by various shortcomings. The key reasons behind the failure of BPST and its implications for the education system in Bhutan. 

Royal Kasho on Civil Service Reform (Analysis)

The Kasho (Royal edict) addressing the need for civil service reform in Bhutan, issued by HM on the occasion of the 113th National Day in Punakha Dzong on 17th December 2020. The Kasho revolves around the history and evolution of Bhutan's civil service and emphasizes the need for reform in order to meet the challenges of the future. Here's a breakdown of the main points and themes:

1. Historical Context: The Kasho begins with a historical perspective, highlighting that Thuchen Choeki Gyalpo Ngawang Namgyal laid the foundation of Bhutan's public service in Punakha Dzong nearly four centuries ago. The civil service has since played a critical role in administration, justice, foreign relations, and defense of sovereignty.
2. Twentieth-Century Reforms: The 20th century saw significant changes in Bhutan, with modernization programs initiated by King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. Reforms were undertaken to modernize the public service, enhancing efficiency, and fulfilling the aspirations of the people.

Addressing these challenges is crucial to ensure a stable and sustainable teaching workforce. Providing ample professional development opportunities, improving salaries and benefits, offering career progression pathways, establishing support systems, and investing in infrastructure and resources are essential steps to mitigate teacher attrition.
