Journal Entry: ITEC Program - Green Building Congress Inauguration

Date: 23/11/2023

As a participant in the ITEC program, I had the honor of attending the inauguration of the Green Building Congress on the 23rd of November 2023. The event took place at the Chennai Trade Centre, and it was a gathering of dignitaries and delegates from various countries. The theme for this year's IGBC International Conference was 'Advancing Net Zero through Decarbonization,' held from the 23rd to the 25th of November 2023.

The day kicked off with an atmosphere filled with enthusiasm and a shared commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly practices. The opening ceremony featured distinguished guests and experts in the field of green building, each contributing to the discourse on how to advance towards a Net Zero future.

A notable presentation during the event was delivered by an architect from Belgium, focusing on the innovative idea of reusing building materials once they have reached the end of their lifecycle. This approach not only promotes sustainability but also guarantees a more responsible and environmentally conscious construction industry.

One of the highlights of the inauguration was the recognition of excellence in the field of green building. Prizes were awarded to school winners from all over India who had competed in various innovation and research activities related to green building concepts. It was heartening to witness the dedication and creativity of young minds contributing to a more sustainable future.

The fame of the hall was bestowed upon V Suresh, the President of the Good Governance India Foundation. His significant contributions to the field of sustainable development and commitment to good governance were acknowledged during the ceremony. What struck me the most was his appreciation for cultural diversity. He expressed genuine happiness at seeing us, participants from Bhutan, wearing our traditional customs. This cultural exchange created a unique connection, and I had the privilege of taking a photo with him, capturing the moment of shared enthusiasm for a greener future.

Following the inauguration, a sumptuous lunch provided an opportunity for networking and informal discussions. The afternoon session, led by V Suresh and other panelists, delved into the 'challenges and opportunities' associated with achieving Net Zero. The discussions were insightful, addressing the complex interplay of factors involved in transitioning towards a sustainable and decarbonized future.

The first day of the IGBC International Conference was not only intellectually stimulating but also an eye-opener to the collaborative efforts being made globally to address environmental challenges. It was encouraging to see experts and enthusiasts alike come together to share knowledge, exchange ideas, and work towards common goals.

The architect from Belgium set the tone for the conference by emphasizing the importance of circular practices in the construction industry. This resonated with my past experiences and learnings, particularly those related to sustainable development during my ITEC program. The conference provided a platform to witness real-world applications of these principles and the impact they can have on a global scale.

As I reflect on the day's events, I am inspired by the shared commitment to sustainability and the tangible efforts being made to address the challenges posed by climate change. The journey towards Net Zero is undoubtedly complex, but the dedication of individuals, organizations, and nations to overcome these challenges is a testament to the collective responsibility we bear for the well-being of our planet.

In the days to come, I look forward to further sessions and interactions that will undoubtedly broaden my understanding of green building concepts and contribute to my growth as an advocate for sustainable practices. The Green Building Congress has set a high standard for the conference, and I am eager to explore the insights and innovations that will unfold in the remaining days of this enriching event.
