1. Introduction
Day 5 marked the final phase of the International Teacher’s Immersion Programme at PDEU. The day was both reflective and celebratory, focusing on the role of sports in education, the importance of school counselling, and the consolidation of learning through group presentations. The valedictory ceremony provided an opportunity to reflect on the overall experiences and professional growth achieved throughout the programme.
2. Reflection on Learning Experiences
2.1 Role of Sports in Indian School Education
The session by Col (Dr) Rakesh Kumar Shrivastawa emphasized the integral role of sports in holistic education. It highlighted how sports contribute not only to physical fitness but also to the development of discipline, teamwork, leadership, and resilience among students.
Reflecting on this session, it became evident that academic excellence alone is insufficient for the overall development of learners. In the Bhutanese context, while co-curricular activities are encouraged, there is scope for a more structured integration of sports into the curriculum. As a teacher, I recognize the need to actively promote student participation in physical activities and to view sports as an essential component of education rather than an optional activity.
2.2 Role of School Counsellor in Fostering Student Emotional & Psychological Health
The session conducted by Ms. Riya Gadani provided deep insights into the importance of counselling services in schools. It emphasized the growing emotional and psychological challenges faced by students and the crucial role counsellors play in supporting student wellbeing.
This session prompted a critical reflection on the current support systems available in schools. While teachers often act as informal counsellors, professional counselling services are essential for addressing complex student needs. The discussion reinforced the importance of empathy, active listening, and early intervention. As an educator, I feel the need to strengthen my ability to identify students in distress and collaborate with relevant support systems.
2.3 Group Presentation of Learning Experience
The group presentation session served as a platform to synthesize and articulate the knowledge and experiences gained throughout the programme. It encouraged collaborative reflection and knowledge sharing among participants from diverse backgrounds.
Presenting our learning experiences allowed for deeper internalization of key concepts such as AI in education, modern pedagogy, critical thinking, mindfulness, and sustainability. The feedback provided by the IFDP panel members was constructive and helped in identifying areas for further professional growth.
This activity reinforced the value of reflective practice and peer learning in professional development.
2.4 Valedictory Ceremony and Closing Reflections
The valedictory session marked the formal conclusion of the programme. The closing remarks by Col (Dr) Rakesh Kumar Shrivastawa emphasized the importance of continuous learning, innovation, and commitment to educational excellence.
This session provided an opportunity to reflect on the journey of the past five days. The programme has significantly broadened my perspective on teaching and learning, particularly in integrating technology, fostering critical thinking, supporting student wellbeing, and promoting sustainability.
